What is RNG and Why is it Crucial for Fair-Play?

It is a widely known fact that luck is at the heart of gambling. You win some, and you lose some, all is a game of chance.

Without this randomness, some players could get the impression that certain individuals get favourable treatment while they are stuck on a streak of bad luck. RNG or Random Number Generator ensure that the industry is fair and fraud can’t happen from the provider’s end.

So what even is RNG and what does it do?

RNG is a computer program or an algorithm  that ensures the given casino game’s radomeness. Every reputable casino and game-provider uses an RNG that is certified by a governing body.

These tests are essential for licensing (your casino is obligated to provide their licesnsing lumber and the country their license belongs to). Places like Wazamba Casino and Vulkan Vegas Casino know these things and ensure that their players enjoy fair-play and equal chance of winning.

There are several such institutions and laboratories and their responsibility is to ensure that the game has a legitimate algorithm and won’t favour the provider.

BMM Testlabs is a long-established independent laboratory that tests and certifies games, iTech Labs is one of the world leaders in testing and certifying online gaming systems, Gaming Labs International (GLI) is another famous iGaming test lab certifying RNG-based games, eCogra (eCommerce Online Gaming Regulation and Assurance) is a London-based agency that inspects online gambling software and systems.

The aforementioned institutions are just the most notable ones, but there are countless bodies that monitor the validity of the game mechanics that are responsible for you winning or losing.

TRNG or PRNG and why does it matter?

If you imagined some NASA computer churning out data to determine probability, we have to disappoint you. The science behind it, although complicated at first, it is quite understandable if you get down to the basics of it.

Both are legitimate algorithms and they can be implemented in games and casinos like Wazamba Casino and Vulkan Vegas Casino make sure that their platforms only contain games that are high quality and their RNGs are stored properly.

Yes, the files that contain the RNG have to be stored in a certain way. It is a requirement that they are kept on a separate server, away from the casinos so the file can’t be altered in any way shape or form to benefit the casino.

There are two types of RNGs, TRNG or True Random Number Generator and Pseudorandom Number Generator.

Let’s start with TRNGs

TRNGs rely on completely random physical phenomena, such as a lightning strike or cosmic rays to produce a random result.

Electronic noise¹ and other unpredictable physical phenomena are captured by True Random Number Generators (TRNGs), which generate random numbers. To guarantee real variability, they utilize post-processing² techniques after converting these measurements into digital data signals.

TRNGs are known for their excellent security and unpredictability, making them perfect for casino gambling applications that guarantee fair results. They can be more expensive and slower than software-based random number generators, though.

Now to continue, PRNGs

Pseudorandom Number Generators (PRNGs) are a little less scifi move-sounding, because they generate “random” numbers using smart algorithms. Theoretically, they could be predictable, but don’t worry—it would take a supercomputer and a math prodigy to figure it out.

In casino gaming, pseudorandom number generators, or PRNGs, are used to mimic unpredictability in games like video poker and slots.

The outcomes appear at random because they create numerical sequences depending on a starting value, or seed (yes, like in Minecraft). Fairness and uniform testing are made possible by PRNGs’ speed and effectiveness.

However, compared to True Random Number Generators (TRNGs), they are less secure for high-stakes scenarios since they are deterministic.

Why are they essential for casinos?

Chance and luck are already concepts that scare some players, some can be discouraged by a losing streak. Casino providers need to make sure that they have the guest’s full trust that what is happening is entirely random and doesn’t skew towards the benefit of the casino.

Casinos have to strictly adhere to the standards of the industry to obtain and keep their gambling licenses, so you know that places like Wazamba Casino and Vulkan Vegas Casino have gone through rigorous  measures and the RNG in the games they provide is legitimate.

Without RNGs and algorithms that ensure fair play, players would stop playing knowing that their chances of winning are influenced by the establishment they’re playing at, and not a mechanism that doesn’t take sides.

Can you trust RNGs?

As we have mentioned previously, RNGs are complex algorithms that rely on complete probability or a pseudoprobability that is virtually impossible to calculate. Furthermore, they are tightly controlled and the bodies that test them ensure that every game you play gives you, and everyone else a fair chance
