Top 8 Questions to Ask When You Compare Energy Plans

Studying various energy plans can be draining. With so many rates and terms of service to interpret, selecting the right plan can be tricky. Therefore, is a good idea to do your homework so you can find a current energy plan. But how can you decide which energy plan is right for you, for your existing home or office or a new plan?

It’s simple— use an energy rates comparison tool and compare plans. Spotting the differences in an energy plan is essential to making the right decision. When you compare energy plans, the first thing to remember is that price is not the only point to consider. Many other factors make a plan practical and valuable. You must ask the right questions to understand what a service provider offers.

Let us see some questions you should ask before selecting an energy plan.

  • What Are the Rates Applicable to the Chosen Energy Plan? Are They Fixed?

ompare the rates offered by different energy service providers in your area. Ask about the electricity cost per kilowatt hour (kWh). For gas, check the megajoule (MJ) rates. Next, find out if the rates are fixed or variable.

A fixed energy rate leaves no room for surprises, while variable rates can change based on changes in the market or industry. Other relevant factors, like wholesale energy costs, may also affect these prices.

  • Are Hidden Charges or Fees a Possibility?

A surprise party is welcome, but who wants surprise bills? Before selecting a plan and finalising the deal, ask the following questions:

  • Does the service provider charge for connection and disconnection?
  • Is there a lock-in period?
  • Will the service provider charge for leaving the plan early?
  • What is the late payment fee policy or credit card fees?

Sometimes, plans appear great, but the fine print contains extras you might overlook.

  • Are Discounts Offered at Any Stage? What Are the Expiry Rules?

Many energy plans offer initial discounts to prompt people to sign up or pay bills on time. Other special offers may also be offered, but reading the fine print is necessary. However, not all discounts may be helpful or available at all times. Ask the following questions:

  • Are discounts for particular actions or steps guaranteed or conditional?
  • How long do discounts last? What is the expiration date?
  • How is the discount computed and applied?

Confirming whether discounts are calculated using total bill amounts or energy usage charges so you can figure out the real rate.

  • What Are the Daily Supply Charges?

Daily supply charges refer to the amount payable for the service, irrespective of how much is used. Suppose you have a home or office used occasionally for accommodation. It means energy consumption is low. However, if the daily supply charges for your energy plan are higher than the usage rates, you will have to pay more despite limited usage.

So, look for both daily supply charges and usage rates. Compute the daily supply charges payable annually to see what you will pay.

  • Does the Service Provider Have a Usage Tracking App or Site?

Today, almost every product or service comes with an app. An energy usage tracker will be invaluable for checking energy usage, payment status, savings, discounts, etc. If an app is available for the plan you have in mind, consider asking the following questions:

  • Can I monitor my daily or weekly energy usage?
  • Will I get alerts about crossing the defined or average usage limits or bill amounts?
  • Can I set payment reminders within the app?
  • Will the app send notifications about discounts, incentives, and savings?

Different service providers may offer various features. Compare them based on your requirements.

  • Does the Service Provider Provide Energy That’s Green?

For many Australians, sustainability is essential. So, check if a service provider offers green energy options. Consider the following questions:

  • Do they have GreenPower plans?
  • Does some of the energy come from renewable sources?
  • Are energy providers investing in environmental projects for carbon offsetting?

Opting for green energy options can reduce your carbon footprint. You might also qualify for government incentives or rebates (if eligible).

  • What About Solar Energy Tariffs?

If you have solar panels, ask about solar feed-in tariffs. These tariffs refer to the amount the energy provider pays users for offering the excess solar energy generated through their panels. Check the following before selecting a plan:

  • What is the feed-in tariff rate?
  • Is there an upper limit on how much can be sent to the service provider?
  • Will it stay the same?

The Cheaper Home Batteries Program plans to offer a 30% discount on battery installation from 1 July 2025.

  • Is Their Customer Service Responsive?

Customer service may seem unimportant, but it matters when something malfunctions or goes wrong. Ask these three simple questions:

  • What are the customer support timings?
  • Are both calling and online chat options available?
  • Is there a central department that handles complaints and requests?

A service provider who is easy to reach makes the entire experience pleasant.

Conclusion

Comparing energy plans is essential to finding the best one for your needs. It helps you understand what you are paying for and whether it is reasonable. This way, you can avoid hidden costs and save some money. So, spare a few minutes to compare plans in-depth and ask the right questions. Choose a plan that works for you instead of one marketed as suitable.
