Tips for Saving Money in Your Divorce

Divorce marks the end of a once beautiful thing and can be pretty challenging emotionally and financially. While you may not have much control over your feelings, you can control how much your divorce costs.

If you can do the same job for less, it does not make sense to want similar results at a much higher cost. It does not matter how you feel. Minimizing divorce costs will work in your favor when you look at it outside your emotional bubble.

Here are some strategies to help you save money in a Georgia divorce.

Get Your Priorities Right

The best approach is to have a short list of things you want the most. Start by creating a list of everything you want to keep, and then categorize them from the most important to the least important.

“Having something on your most important side does not always mean your spouse will have it on their most important list. However, having reasonable priorities can help reduce contentions that could lead to a protracted divorce and, ultimately, high litigation costs,” says Allen Russell.

Get the Right Team

The team you get together will determine the outcomes of your case and the costs involved. For example, if you go for a celebrity lawyer, you should expect to pay more. Go for a lawyer within your reach regarding affordability while ensuring their experience.

Also, your spouse’s choice of lawyer may determine the lawyer you pick, so do some research to know who they are working with. If their lawyer has a history of preferring litigation over amicable resolution, you may want to get an experienced trial lawyer.

Sometimes, you may need to hire other professionals, for example, financial experts, to help with preparation. This way, you have everything in order before talking to a lawyer, reducing the time needed to gather and organize information, thereby reducing costs.

Leave Your Emotions Out of It

It is almost impossible not to get emotional over a divorce, especially if your spouse’s actions were the reason it happened. However, it is essential to note that emotions and decision-making are never a good combination, so you must be intentional about getting emotions out of your decision-making.

Your family attorney and support system may be more relaxed with emotions, which makes them a good source of sober advice. You do not have to like it, but it may be the best decision, and you may only appreciate it much later, after your emotions have waned. When emotions are out of the way, there is little motivation to complicate the process, which can help keep the costs down.

Settle Smart

Most divorces settle outside of court because it is the cheapest option and offers all parties significant control over the outcomes. Whenever possible, it may be a good idea to settle rather than go all the way to trial. However, it is important to ensure you do not take an offer that will leave you disadvantaged post-divorce.

You will need to know your numbers, and this is where professional input becomes critical. If you need clarification on the value of your marital property, an auditor can help you figure that out. Also, the input of a family lawyer is critical because they can help you understand the different aspects of family law and champion your rights.
