The significance of memes beyond entertainment

Imagine you are watching a TV series when you see that your friend has sent you a picture via chat. You open it and see a montage. On the left, a blonde woman is screaming, and on the right, a white cat is sitting in front of a plate of food with a strange expression on its face. You immediately recognize the Woman Yelling at a Cat meme, without your friend having to explain anything.

Every day, we encounter memes on social media and in messages from our friends that make us laugh out loud. Many of us have probably wondered where these strange images come from and why they have become so widespread on the internet. In this article, we will try to answer these questions.

The origin and brief history of memes

Memes are humorous images that spread across the internet, responding to a current topic or situation with a caption. It is obvious that a creative meme can make us smile, but it is less clear who and when the concept of memes was created.

The term “meme” was first used by the famous biologist Richard Dawkins. He used it to refer to concepts that spread by word of mouth, originating from an abstract system of thought but becoming widely known in abbreviated form. An example of this is the term “Freudian slip,” which originated in the psychoanalytic theories of Sigmund Freud and is now commonly used in everyday language.

Based on Dawkins’ theory, memes, like genes, pass on information, but not on a biological level, but on a cultural level. Based on this, they are an integral part of human culture and evolution.

The exact date of the emergence of internet memes cannot be determined. However, it is certain that it dates back to the early 2000s, at the same time when prank videos and famous trollface comics dominated YouTube. From 2010 onwards, a real flood of memes swept across social media sites. Funny captions and images commented on politics, global warming, or even the latest from Greatwin.

The role and place of memes in the world

Since then, a significant meme culture has developed and spread widely from funny videos and the mocking trollface. Some memes are now part of everyday language, regularly appearing on television, in politics, in films, and in various areas of marketing. Let’s take a look at the role memes play in our culture and everyday life.

Memes as a source of humor

We primarily think of memes as a source of humor, and this is precisely the role they play in our lives. Humor and laughter are good for the soul. That is why it is important to bring some joy into our gray everyday lives. Since they consist of images and short texts, they are very easy and quick to decode, without any effort. We just glance at them, have a laugh, and then we can continue browsing Spinsy Casino.

At the same time, humor is not only a source of joy, but also a coping strategy. In difficult situations, we can somewhat alleviate our negative mood by resorting to parody. Memes can help us accept difficulties, especially in the case of negative news.

To give a recent example, during the 2020 coronavirus pandemic, countless memes related to lockdown appeared on the internet. This somewhat alleviated the feelings of loneliness and sadness for people in what seemed like a hopeless situation.

Memes as a community-building force

Meme creators are constantly responding to public events and current news, but often even to the creation of a website such as Spinsy Casino. Due to their topicality, trends and meme topics are constantly changing. One day the internet is talking about price increases, the next day it’s about Greatwin or Amazon discounts. So, it takes a serious online presence to keep up with memes.

Memes have a big impact on us not only on the internet, but also on social media. In everyday life, you may have found yourself in a situation where someone used a funny phrase that you didn’t understand. When you asked them about it, they explained the humorous remark with a meme or trend.

All this suggests that people who understand and use memes speak a language that only those who are familiar with these humorous images can understand. In this way, meme users form a community that no one wants to be left out of. This circle can be further narrowed down according to the occupation of the users. Think, for example, of memes that are exclusively for university students, Greatwin users, or doctors.

Memes as a means of compression

A significant cultural, political or public event is usually covered in greater detail in newspapers or on the news, as articles and reports strive to cover every little detail.

In contrast, memes greatly simplify communication about complex and complicated events and convey them in a lighter style. This makes abstract content more accessible. All of this can be a huge help in the learning process for certain age groups, such as schoolchildren.

Memes as a means of cultural transmission

Finally, returning to Dawkins’ theory, memes are just as much a means of cultural transmission as visual arts, poetry, or music. Like these, memes always reveal something about their creators and users, while also providing a faithful reflection of the characteristics of a given era.

Whatever topic is highlighted by currently popular memes, whether it be sporting events, Spinsy Casino’s offerings, or the results of a presidential election, it reveals something about our present. So, despite the fact that memes primarily exist in the online world, their cultural significance should not be underestimated.
