Having an old and outdated shed can lead to a variety of annoying storage issues that can impact your goods. As newer materials have become more accessible to the general public, an increasing number of individuals are working on shed conversions. While it may not seem like it, the cost of converting a shed can quickly skyrocket which is why knowing budgeting tips and tricks can keep some money in your wallet.

Planning and Budgeting for a Shed Conversion

When going through a shed conversion it’s easy to get stuck on the idea of throwing every possible new material and technology into the shed. However, budgeting in a cost-effective way often requires creative shed conversion ideas rather than spending boatloads of money. Start by assessing the current condition of your shed to see how much needs replacing. For example, if there’s a hole in the roof but the walls are fine, you might be able to save large sums of money by only replacing the roof.

Create a detailed budget that includes the materials, labor, and permits you will need for the task once you have finished assessing the condition of the shed. Once you take a look at this budget, think about whether doing it yourself or hiring a professional is the more cost-effective option.

Gathering Materials and Supplies

Assuming you’ve settled on continuing to handle the shed conversion yourself, focus on sourcing materials and supplies cost-effectively. This may mean taking a trip to secondhand stores or even going to a salvage yard to negotiate scrap prices. Whenever possible you should try to use recycled materials as these will be far cheaper than the alternative. If you don’t already own power tools, consider either renting them or borrowing them from friends so that you don’t need to make a one-time purchase; be sure you know how to use these tools before beginning though.

Insulation and Heating Tips

One area you can get smarter on with your budget is insulation and heating. Don’t forget that a shed conversion can have an ongoing cost if it’s hooked up to your HVAC system due to being used as a workspace. Consider insulating the walls, ceiling, and floor to retain the temperature so that you can reduce energy costs. Also, take steps such as investing in energy-efficient heating options like a space heater or radiant heat to further reduce costs. To avoid electricity costs, consider installing plenty of natural light that lets daylight into the shed rather than relying on lamps.

Electrical and Plumbing Considerations

New construction route-in plumbing can cost between $1,500-$17,500 depending on the scope of the build, but that low end may still be too high for you. Therefore, consider tips such as using rainwater to harvest water sustainably or utilize LED lighting for energy efficiency if you need to install lights in your shed. In truth, electrical and plumbing are the two areas where cost-savings will be harder to find, so consider handling these tasks yourself to reduce labor costs.

Saving on the Finishing Touches

For some, aesthetics may not matter in the slightest whereas for others it may be the most important part of the conversion. It’s where you also have the most flexibility for cost savings. Try to use affordable paints and finishes on your shed and decorate it with secondhand furnishings or even DIY art creations. You can also use natural materials such as wood or plants found on your property for a budget-friendly aesthetic.

Additional Shed Conversion Tips to Cut Costs

Depending on the scope of your conversion, it’s possible that cutting costs will be extremely difficult. Even so, use some of the following quick tips to save as many dollars as possible:

  • Plan ahead to avoid costly mistakes
  • Prioritize essential features over non-essentials
  • Be patient and take your time to save money
  • Use a joint DIY and professional approach to converting the shed
  • Hook up the shed to existing HVAC or plumbing systems to avoid new installation costs

Plan out your shed conversion in a cost-effective manner

The last thing you want to do is blow all your savings on a shed conversion simply because you want all the bells and whistles. Plan your conversion properly and research costs ahead of time so that you aren’t hit with sticker shock when you head to the store to get supplies. For assistance with converting your shed, especially if the required tasks are beyond your expertise, reach out to professionals who can assist with the job.
