Plumbing emergencies can happen to the best of us and sometimes at the worst moments. While a plumbing emergency can happen at any time to anyone, it is how you react in an emergency that can greatly determine the outcome of the event. Whether you live in a brand-new house or an older rundown home, there is a chance that you will encounter some plumbing issues and emergencies at one time or another. Being able to manage your stress during these times can help you to remain calm and mitigate some damage before it gets worse. Having the skills to react appropriately to an emergency situation will allow you to respond effectively and successfully if this were to happen to you.

Calmly Shutting Off Your Water

A common instinct in an emergency situation is to be frantic at what is happening all around you. The first effective way to manage your stress if something is immediately happening to your plumbing system is to calmly address the situation of what is going on. Being frantic and stressed can cause you to make mistakes or shut down, therefore not accomplishing anything productive to help out the situation. When you have assessed the situation, calmly shut off your water to prevent more damage from happening to your home. You can do this by finding your main shut-off valve and turning off the water access to your home. Your main water valve can be found near your water meter outside, in your basement, garage, or even in the bathroom. If you have assessed the situation and found where the specific issue may be, then go ahead and turn off that pipe that is directly impacting the plumbing issue you are experiencing.

Determine Any Electrical Issues

You can breathe a little easier knowing that the water is shut off to your house in a plumbing emergency. That can help you feel confident that the water will not continue to keep flowing and impacting your house. The step you can take to put you more at ease during a stressful plumbing emergency is determining whether or not you need to shut off your electricity. You can know if you need to do this if there is water coming out of your outlets or any of your electrical appliances. Locate your circuit breaker panel and shut off your electricity if you have water coming out of any of those locations to prevent fires or shock from taking place. It can also help to minimize electrical damage as well if you are struggling with a plumbing emergency that is impacting your electrical systems.

Call in the Professionals

One of the best ways to manage your stress and give yourself and your home the best chance of recovery after an emergency is by calling and trusting the plumbing professionals. Nothing will put your mind more at ease than contacting Idaho Falls plumbing to address a plumbing emergency that you are experiencing. Plumbers have years of experience dealing with all sorts of large and small emergencies and will do their best to mitigate the emergency as fast and efficiently as possible. Completing those first two steps is so important in helping to stop the issue and preserve your house, but contacting the professionals will help to identify the exact issues and take the steps to help ensure the situation is well in hand.
