Exploring Hair Topper Base Materials: Which is Best for Your Lifestyle?

In the world of hair toppers for women, there are numerous base materials available that the piece can be made of. Each of these materials serves a purpose and has its own unique benefits and downsides. Because they are all different, each one might fit into your life in a different way or not fit in at all! In order to get the best possible experience and results from your women’s hairpieces, you need to know what base material to choose to best fit your lifestyle. In this blog, we will break down the most common materials used in the construction of hair toppers for thinning hair and explain the benefits of each.

Poly/Skin

Poly and skin bases are made with a clear polyurethane material. This material can vary in thickness and in opacity. The thinner this material is, the more natural it looks when sitting flush against the skin. Poly and skin bases can be grouped together as they are largely the same. Hair pieces for women made with these materials are great for those who want to use either tape or glue to apply their topper. The solid material makes for a surface that most any adhesive can stick to, and is the easiest material to clean. It is also easy to have clips attached. The solid nature of the material also makes it relatively durable. However, this solidness also has its downsides. Because there are openings in the base, there is no airflow going to the scalp. This can lead to more heat on the scalp, and possibly more sweat as well.

Monofilament

Monofilament is a thin mesh material that is extremely popular as a base for hair toppers for women. This material is a very fine mesh, but is thicker than traditional lace materials are. This material is known for its durability, so if you are looking for women’s hairpieces that will last the longest, this is the best choice of base material. Monofilament will usually be enclosed in a poly border, as the mesh would unravel without something to keep the ends together. Adhesives cannot be applied to the monofilament itself, only the poly perimeter, so if you want to adhere the full base of a hair topper to your scalp, this is not the material for you.

Silk

Silk is a very soft and flexible material used in the making of hair toppers for women. Like monofilament, it required a perimeter to enclose the material in order to keep the edges from fraying. The main benefit of this material is that it is extremely comfortable. The softness of the silk feels wonderful against the scalp and skin, and is a favorite among those who want a comfortable wearing experience. The silk can also be quite durable, but does not allow for much airflow as it is woven quite tightly. While it is comfortable, it can be too warm for some.

Lace

Lace is highly sought after in the world of women’s hair toppers. It is an extremely flexible material, but its main attraction is how natural it looks. Among hair pieces for women it is considered the most natural looking material, which is why lace fronts are often used to give the most natural hairline. Lace is also very breathable, allowing ample airflow to the scalp which makes it great for wearing in hot climates or if you are very active. However, not all adhesives work on lace, so you need to be careful to purchase ones that are able to adhere to the material. Lace is also quite tricky to clean due to the small holes in the mesh, so it takes longer to perform maintenance. Lace is also not as durable as other base options, so while it will look and feel good, it may not last as long.

Which base material you choose for your women’s hair toppers is up to you. This decision may be informed by many things, including availability and pricing. But it is important to include the benefits and negatives of each material heavily while shopping, as they are truly the most important factors. Choosing the wrong base material for your lifestyle can completely ruin the experience of wearing your hair topper, as you may find that it is not comfortable, not convenient, or not looking the way you want.  This blog gives an overview of the reasons you may want to choose each material and also the reasons why it may not work for you. However, it is always beneficial to speak directly with an expert if you have any questions about what will work best for you and the life that you lead. Talk to customer support experts at companies like Superhairpieces to get more in-depth information on all base materials and hair toppers for women.
