As a general contractor in Georgia, it is crucial to keep your license current through continuing education (CE). The State of Georgia mandates CE for general contractors to ensure they stay knowledgeable of regulations and best practices in the construction industry. This article will outline the easy steps contractors can take to complete their Georgia general contractor continuing education and maintain an active license.

Requirements and Deadlines

The State of Georgia requires general contractors to earn 8 hours of approved CE every two years before renewing their license. The CE period runs from October 1st of an even-numbered year to September 30th of the next even-numbered year. For example, the current period is October 1, 2024, to September 30, 2026.

Contractors must submit proof of completing their CE hours by September 30th of the even year. If CE hours are not fulfilled and documented by this deadline, the contractor’s license will expire and become invalid until hours are made up. Contractors need to be aware of these biennial deadlines to avoid any lapses in licensure.

Approved Course Providers

There are many options for contractors to earn CE hours from approved providers. The State maintains a list on its website of national, state, and local organizations designated to offer CE courses. Some of the largest approved providers include the RocketCert.

This provider offers online courses covering topics from construction law to project management strategies. Contractors can browse course calendars to pick CE events that fit their schedules and interests. You will be provided with certificates of completion documenting the hours you have earned.

Self-Study Options

For contractors who want flexibility in how and when they complete CE, self-study is a convenient option. The State approves self-study courses that include online or home-study programs with a test component.

Popular self-study sources include sites like RocketCert which offer pre-made CE packages on various subjects that can be completed at one’s own pace.

These self-study providers also directly report completion information to the State licensing agency. Self-study is a good alternative for contractors who have difficulty attending live events due to their work schedules.

Subject Matter Requirements

At least 4 of the required 8 CE hours must pertain to legal issues, financial responsibilities, or technical/regulatory aspects of the construction business in Georgia. The remaining hours can cover any other construction-related topic. This ensures contractors stay informed on Georgia-specific rules and regulations impacting their work.

Common qualifying subjects contractors can find from providers include construction law, contract management, OSHA compliance, building codes, project estimating, and sustainability practices. As long as the subject is construction-focused, it will fulfill the CE obligation.

Documenting and Submitting Hours

Once CE hours are completed from approved sources, contractors must retain certificates of completion as proof. Around 90 days before the license renewal deadline (June 30th), the State will notify all licensees of their CE documentation submission process, which is typically done electronically.

Contractors simply upload photos or scans of their certificates showing the provider, course title, date, and hours earned. The State licensing agency will review for completeness and assign renewed license status once the minimum 8 hours are verified. Proper record-keeping of the certificates makes this final submission process very straightforward.

Benefits of Compliance

Following the State’s CE guidelines has multiple benefits for contractors and their businesses.

  1. It keeps their license active and in good standing so they can legally conduct construction work.
  2. The CE expands contractors’ knowledge of new industry practices and regulations, better equipping them to navigate an ever-changing field.
  3. Staying current through CE hours can provide risk management benefits by preventing costly mistakes from lack of awareness.
  4. Contractors also gain practical tips and make valuable connections at live CE events they can apply to their business operations.

Ultimately, fulfilling the biennial CE obligation is a simple process that reaps significant rewards for licensed contractors in Georgia.

In Summary

It’s time for Georgia contractors to start on their continuing education hours to keep their licenses active. Don’t procrastinate – begin exploring the many flexible online and in-person course options offered by approved providers. Furthering your knowledge and skills through CE pays off with a valid license, risk prevention, and competitive advantages. Make continuing education a priority and take the first step now in your journey of lifelong learning and professional development.
