To move ahead in life, it is important to look back at our past and learn. If we do not reflect on our past and enhance our future actions, there will be little to no human progress.

Hence, archaeology is a very crucial discipline that has been around for centuries. Even before the advent of modern technology, archaeologists have gone above and beyond to learn the past and discover secrets and facts vital to human existence.

However, with the advent of modern technology in recent times, archaeology has evolved. Modern archaeology relies on technology. Archaeologists no longer have to survey around jungles and random old sites with their naked eye, making unnecessary damage to old structures. So, let us figure out the role of digital tech in Archaeological Discoveries.

Is Archaeology Important In Today’s Generation

In simple words, archaeology is the study of historical factors that affected our ancestors thousands of years back. It studies the past and uncovers how our ancestors lived and reacted to nature and other means of existence.

So, is it necessary to learn about our ancestors and the historical facts now? It sure is. Archaeology helps us to travel far back into the time when the early men survived without any modern tools we use today. Without understanding how they perceived and adapted to life, it will be impossible to make any progress in the current life of human existence.

Most importantly, it is through the analysis of things that our ancestors made and left behind for us that we know the basics of life. And with modern archaeology gaining more strength, we are discovering more every day, learning how life was thousands of years back.

The most fascinating thing about archaeology is that it can help us fight current world problems. It can be climate change or even communal issues. By learning how our ancestors pursued nature or communal boundaries, history can help us fight the problems that we are facing today. Hence, even if archaeology seems to be a study of things that existed thousands of years back, it is relevant even today.

Use Of Modern Technology In Archaeology

Technology has helped archaeology in many ways. The most significant changes technology brought to archaeology is how data is collected, analyzed, and stored. And now that we know the importance of archaeology, let us try to understand how modern technology helps archaeologists with their work.

Lidar

One of the most popular technological advancements in archaeology has to be the use of Lidar. Archaeologists no longer have to excavate a jungle or hidden city in person to find some historical facts. Short for “light detection and ranging,” Lidar is an airborne laser scanning tool mounted on helicopters and drones.

Lidar was originally created to use on Apollo 15 in the 1970s to map the moon’s surface. Later, it became a common tool for archaeologists to scan and map medieval cities buried deep inside forests. Lidar can excavate through dense forests with clear pictures of ancient architecture and cultures.

The fascinating thing about Lidar is that you can also find small-scale elements. Meghan Howey of the University of New Hampshire used Lidar to identify cache pits in the Great Lake regions. Hence, Lidar can be used to discover previously unknown areas hidden deep inside dense vegetation.

3-D Modeling

Although archaeologists have found many ancient documents from historical places, they have struggled to review them without causing any damage. Ancient documents, especially rolled-up scrolls, are very delicate. They are so fragile that even a minor mistake in handling them can cause their breakage. Hence, most museum curators and archaeologists do not even dare to handle and read them.

However, with the advent of CT scanning and 3-D modeling, artefacts can now be virtually unrolled. Archaeologists can now read and review the entire content inside the rolled scrolls without worrying about any damage. The modeling technology can uncover hidden texts virtually and provide a clear picture of what is written.

By reading the hidden texts and patterns, archaeologists can now better understand languages of ancient times and facts that were unknown.

Burial Excavations

Other than finding hidden places and recovering artefacts, modern technology has helped archaeologists understand ancient burial cultures without harming the dignity of the dead. Understanding the burial cultures of different societies is a part of archaeology. However, without technology, it was hard to dig around and find facts that have grave significance.

Today, archaeological experts like Dr.Chriss Gaffney use underground mapping to build visuals of tombs. Tools like this can even help map out an old abbey with a cemetery consisting of thousands of bodies.

Finding out burial methods and tombs through geographical techniques and underground mapping help to understand different community’s beliefs in the resurrection of the human body. It is a very significant aspect of archaeology made possible by modern technology.

Social Media

The most rewarding aspect of modern technology in relation to archaeology is social media and public sharing. Digital platforms like Instagram, YouTube, etc., have made it easier and more convenient for archaeologists to share their findings with the world.

Social media platforms have made it possible to create interactive experiences where people can explore archaeological sites and artefacts without any hassle. Even virtual reality and augmented reality have made exploring archaeological findings more interesting for the common people.

Hence, if you are an archaeologist or a keen person willing to share archaeological facts with a large audience, you can always use social media platforms, gain followers, and teach facts that are worth the discussion.

Endnote

Archaeology will always play a vital role in our lives. Even if one is not involved directly in discovering facts about the past, one will always be impacted by the change brought about by the archaeological facts.

We always learn from our past. Modern technology has only helped us reflect on our past more effectively and efficiently. Hence, it is impossible to overlook the importance of modern technology in the field of archaeology.
