Are you considering plastic injection molding to create plastic parts? It is a popular process by which plastic item manufacturers use molten plastic to create plastic parts. However, it is crucial to have a good idea of the major pros and cons of plastic injection molding (PIM).

By understanding the basics of plastic injection molding and its pros and cons, you can plan better if you intend to use this process to create plastic components. Moreover, you will also get to know how the process works.

Therefore, to have an idea of whether you must consider PIM or not, read on.

Plastic Injection Molding: A General Overview

There are many companies that produce plastic products with the help of plastic injection molding in Singapore. Hence, to have an idea of whether you must consider this process to create plastic products or not, you need to understand what it is.

Basically, plastic injection molding is a method with the help of which you can get plastic products. Here, the manufacturer injects molten plastic materials into a mold. Then, they cool and solidify the material to create the final product.

In fact, this method is suitable for those manufacturers that are involved in mass production of plastic materials. For instance, you need to consider plastic injection molding when you want to create complicated plastic shapes. Moreover, this process also plays a large part in the plastic processing industry.

So, if you want to create plastic items with complicated designs, it would be nearly impossible to create them with other methods. Therefore, it is crucial to understand how the method works and its various pros and cons.

How Does Plastic Injection Molding Work?

If you want to use plastic injection molding, you need a molding machine. The process includes six steps: 1) Clamping, 2) Injection, 3) Dwelling, 4) Cooling, 5) Opening the Mold, and 6) Product Removal.

You need thermoplastic pellets to start using the PIM process. Here, you first need to melt those pellets. Then, you have to feed those molten pellets into the hopper of the molding machine. After that, these go into the barrel. Here, to make space for the molten pellets, a reciprocating screw pulls back.

In the next step, the screw pushes forward which forces the molten plastic through the outlet nozzle. At the other end of the nozzle, there is the pressure instrument that gives shape to the plastic. Here, the platen pressure ensures all plastic gets out of the nozzle. It does so by bringing both the nozzle and the mold close to each other.

Now, as the plastic fills up crevices, the air that was present in the empty space comes out of the mold vent. Moreover, it is also important to ensure that the mold stays at a steady temperature that aligns with the melting point of the material. It enables the inside part to cool and harden with time.

Pros and Cons of Plastic Injection Molding

The following are the major pros and cons of plastic injection molding that you must know about:

Pros

Here are the top pros of plastic injection molding that you will benefit from:

  1. If you want to create intricate plastic parts, PIM is the best process to consider. Also, it enables you to add more features with fewer tolerances.
  2. Once you make a mold tool, you can create many identical parts. This helps a lot in mass production.
  3. Although there is a high investment at the start (when you create a plastic injection molding tool), the cost lowers down later.
  4. In some cases, a molding cycle can take as little as 10 seconds. This makes it one of the fastest processes.
  5. You can use a variety of materials to use in plastic injection molding. For instance, you can use thermoplastic rubber, antistatic plastic, chemical-resistant plastics, biocompostable plastic, infrared, and more.
  6. The best part about PIM is that it produces very little waste, unlike other processes of creating plastic items.

Cons

Here are a few cons of plastic injection molding that you need to be aware of:

  1. As already discussed, there is a high initial cost.
  2. The initial lead time is high as it can take almost six months in the product conception process.
  3. If you want to create large parts, you need huge machines. In both cases, you need a lot of expenses.
  4. To avoid tooling issues, careful design is crucial. Otherwise, it leads to a lot of waste.

Are You Using Plastic Injection Molding?

Whether you use plastic injection molding to create your plastic product depends on a lot of factors. However, if you want a cost-effective and economically viable plastic manufacturing process, this is one of the best ones to consider.
