Yes, certain salad dressings can be frozen, but it’s a question of what the ingredients are. For best results, most oil-based dressings and vinaigrette dressings freeze well. But creamy dressings do not.

To prolong the shelf-life of leftover or homemade salad dressings, freeze them. But some salad dressings might split or thicken when frozen.

Which salad dressings can be frozen?

Which salad dressings can be frozen?

These are typical dressings that will typically freeze well:

  • Italian dressing
  • Balsamic vinaigrette
  • Lemon vinaigrette
  • Herb vinaigrette
  • Olive oil-based dressings

These dressings can split apart a little when freezing, but will usually restore their normal consistency following a shake or whisk.

Which one is NOT suitable to put into the freezer?

Try not to freeze food with creamy dressings as they can separate.

Examples include:

  • Ranch dressing
  • Caesar dressing
  • Blue cheese dressing
  • Thousand Island dressing
  • Yogurt-based dressings

These dressings are safe to eat after thawing. But they can turn grainy, watery or rough.

Freezing tips

When done properly, the freezing of salad dressing is easy.

  • If cooked ingredients are used for dressing, cool it down to room temperature.
  • Use a seal container or freezer container to store dressing.
  • Allow for expansion.
  • Label the container with the time and date of freezing.
  • Keep in the freezer.

Freeze in small amounts to easily thaw just what you need.

How Long Will Salad Dressings Keep?

How Long Will Salad Dressings Keep?

Frozen salad dressing is best if used within:

  • Bacterial Risk: Low to moderate.
  • Handling: Oil based – no handling, paste based – may be handled.
  • Dressings to which other ingredients have been added: Expires in 5 days (refrigerated) or 2 months (frozen)

When continually frozen, the dressings will hold up better than these times. But the flavor and texture may be affected.

Defrost it in the refrigerator

Salad dressing can be safely thawed overnight.

After thawing:

  • Shake the container vigorously to ensure good mixing of contents.
  • Mix if ingredients are not mixed together.
  • Taste before serving.
  • If it has an odd odor, is mouldy or has indications of spoilage, discard it.

Never thaw for a prolonged period of time at room temperature.

These tips will help you achieve best results:

In order to keep the highest quality:

  • Refrigerate fresh dressing as soon as possible.
  • Limit freezer burn by using airtight containers.
  • Freeze in small quantities.
  • Refreeze only after freezing.
  • Stir or blend well before serving.

These steps will help to keep the flavor and texture.

Will Homemade Salad Dressing Freeze?

Yes. Dressings and vinaigrettes made with oil are very likely to freeze.

Fresh herbs, garlic or citrus juice dressings are usually okay, but may not be as sharp after the freeze.

Dressings can be frozen, but chances are better that there will be a change in texture with homemade dressings.

Salad dressings can be frozen, as long as the type of dressing is right. Most oil based vinaigrettes are likely to freeze and thaw safely. Creamy dressings (mayonnaise or dairy) may separate or develop a grainy texture. Freezing small amounts, in airtight containers and thawing gradually in the freezer will help to maximize quality.

FAQs

How long will frozen salad dressing last?

The oil based dressings have a storage time of approximately 6 months, the creamy dressings of approximately 2 months.

Why does the oil separate from salad dressing when it freezes?

Oil, water and milk or emulsified ingredients will naturally come out of the frozen product. Dressings that are oily will re-activate when shaken or whisked.
