A fireplace is a great installation for living spaces. It has functional and aesthetic effects that make it great for lounges and entertainment rooms. The primary function of a fireplace is heating. One can argue the first fireplace was a bonfire, nonetheless, it set the functional design for the initial living space units. The wood-burning fireplace is the oldest design. It has undergone numerous changes to make it more efficient and effective at heating. Other options include gas, ethanol and electric fireplace.

Each type of fireplace design has unique pros and cons providing options for people with varied preferences. However, one style that resonates with many enthusiasts and interior designers is the custom Hamptons-inspired fireplace design. The Hamptons is a unique style seen in homes owned by rich and famous people in Long Island, New York. It combines cool, classic and sophisticated designs with rustic, casual beach vibes. Australians have added a twist to the design elements to combine traditional American North East Coast style, modern American Hamptons, Colonial New England, Cape Cod and Nantucket style. Here are some design elements to consider for a Hampton-inspired fireplace.

Colour palette

Hamptons-inspired fireplaces mimic the beach and nature. Therefore, colour options are predominantly soft and neutral. The most common choices include light shades of white, cream, beige, blue and grey. Bold colours can be used as accents to create depth and character in the design.

Materials

Natural high-quality materials are the backbone of the Hampton aesthetic. Therefore, consider installing distressed wood, natural stone, marble and brass accents. These materials can feature on the facing or hearth. Marble stones are commonly used on the log set of electric and gas fireplaces to accentuate the aesthetic of the firebox.

Mantel

Aside from the firebox, the mantel is one of the most important focal points for any fireplace. A Hampton-inspired style requires an intentional approach to the material design and accents. Simple elegant designs work best. Therefore, maintain clean lines and few decorative details with a natural appeal.

Fireplace inserts

The Hampton-inspired fireplace has no limitation on the insert preference. Wood-burning, gas and electric fireplace can all adopt the style seamlessly. Nonetheless, the wood-burning fireplace is easier to style as it already has a rustic touch. The gas and electric fireplace can work for a contemporary Hamptons look.

Lighting:

Lighting is an important element in the overall design of a fireplace. Ample lighting creates a warm and inviting atmosphere that can centre around the fireplace. Consider wall sconces, table lamps, standing lamps and chandeliers that complement the colour palette around your fireplace.

In the lighting design of the Hamptons style fireplace, in addition to traditional lamps, Neon Signs can also be the finishing touch to enhance the style.

You can customize the shape and color of the neon lights according to your preferences to make it a unique decoration. For example, if you like the ocean theme, you can choose blue neon lights and design them into the shape of waves.

These Neon Signs are not only lighting tools, but also artistic decorations, making the Hamptons-style fireplace the most charming presence in the home at night.

Plants and Greenery

A touch of nature always accentuates the Hamptons style. Potted plants or fresh flowers can go a long way in complementing the aesthetics around your fireplace. You can place them on the mantel or hearth. Live plants are great but you can get away with synthetic plants if it’s the looks that are important.

Beachy Accents:

The Hamptons style has a lot of coastal inspiration. Therefore, incorporating beachy accents around your fireplace will accentuate the theme. Consider hanging coastal artwork above the fireplace, and woven textures. Adding carefully curated accessories like sea glass, driftwood, shells, and themed ceramics can enhance the coastal feel.

Personal Touches:

Although you may want to stay true to the Hamptons aesthetic, the design should reflect your taste. Don’t shy from adding personal fittings and accessories that show personal style. Ultimately, it’s your space to enjoy. However, if you are designing for tenants, you can avoid the personal touches.

The Hamptons style is all about creating a comfortable, welcoming, and elegant space that captures the essence of luxurious, coastal living. By paying attention to the details and selecting the right materials, colours, and decor, you can design a stunning Hamptons-inspired fireplace that will be the heart of your living space.
