Why We’re So Obsessed with Luck (Even If We Don’t Believe in It)

Luck is a strange thing. Although most people say they don’t believe in luck, they seem to take enjoyment in making weird guesses about good and bad luck, wishing for it or looking for lucky numbers with which to play the lottery. It might seem irrational, but is there a good reason we’re obsessed with luck, even if we don’t exactly believe in it?

The Comfort of Hope

One major reason we care about luck is that it offers us hope. The fact of the matter is, things in life are random and unfair. And when things go sour, it’s comforting to think fate will somehow step in. Even if we are not superstitious people, the thought of a lucky event can provide solace. It’s like a little light in the dark.

Many people engage in rituals to be lucky, small acts that help maintain this hopeful mindset. For instance, when people purchase lottery tickets, they tend to choose lucky lottery numbers. They understand the chances of winning are typically minuscule, but selecting those numbers allows them to regain some measure of control and hope. It is not so much about truly believing the numbers will win but about being optimistic and excited.

Making Sense of Random Events

Another reason we tend to dwell on luck is that it helps us make sense of random occurrences. Life is full of chance events, like meeting a new friend or missing a bus. When things go well, we sometimes say we were “lucky”. When things go wrong, we might say we were “unlucky”. It helps us understand what’s happening without feeling like everything is all our fault or totally beyond our control.

For instance, if someone were to win the lottery with their lucky lottery numbers, it would seem like a special moment and not simply a stroke of chance. It’s simpler to say that “I was fortunate” than to acknowledge that it was sheer randomness.

Luck as a Social Story

Luck is also a huge factor in stories and culture. We hear about lucky individuals in movies, books, and the stories we all tell in our everyday conversations. Stories like these make luck an element of success and failure in our way of thinking. When we discuss the notion of lucky lottery numbers or lucky charms, we join a common form of thought and communication that helps us feel connected to others.

But this social dimension of luck is what also makes it so fun and intriguing. It’s not just a matter of believing in luck, but of being part of a group that shares hopes and dreams. We may not believe in luck, but talking about it makes us feel more connected to others and hopeful.

Final Thoughts: Luck and Control

Luck is a way to feel like we have some control over things we really don’t. Life is so unpredictable, and that can be scary. In thinking about luck, we create a way to imagine that good things can happen to us, even if we can’t plan or predict them.

Picking lucky lottery numbers is just one way people try to take control. It’s a tiny action that makes them feel that they are taking action to improve the odds if most of it is randomness. Many people also engage in good luck rituals to reinforce this sense of control and hope.
