Warehouse employee safety and productivity rest on a single foundation- the warehouse floor. Sadly, this foundation gets overlooked very often.

Considering the traffic on warehouse floors, it should be squeaky clean. Aside from the safety and well-being of the employees, a dirty warehouse floor can also have an adverse effect on the machinery and equipment being used in a warehouse.

That’s why knowing how to clean a warehouse floor is important.

One way is to outsource warehouse cleaning to a professional cleaning company. But, if you want your in-house cleaning crew to do their best, make sure they follow the steps below.

How to Clean Warehouse Floors Effectively?

Cleaning warehouse floors is more than a “sweep, rinse, and let it dry” process. It requires a systematic approach and the right tools. From collecting dust and debris firsthand to using proper PPE (personal protective equipment), there’s a lot to consider. To ensure thorough and efficient cleaning, investing in commercial floor scrubbers can significantly streamline the process, making it easier to maintain a pristine and safe environment.

Here are all the steps one should follow for effective warehouse floor cleaning.

1. Sweep Your Warehouse Floor

Before you do anything else, sweep your warehouse floor. You don’t want any debris, objects, or particles rolling around on the floor while you’re deep-cleaning the warehouse floor. That’s why it’s important to fully sweep the warehouse floor using brooms, sweepers, or vacuum cleaners.

Here’s what happens when you don’t sweep before scrubbing/cleaning.

When you skip the floor sweep and start scrubbing straight away, the various dust particles will turn your scrubber into sandpaper. This will leave marks on your floor and can permanently damage the warehouse floor surface.

2. Select the Right Cleaning Solution

From equipment to techniques, choosing the right cleaning solutions for your warehouse floor is an important task. Warehouse concrete floor cleaning is not the same as epoxy or painted floor cleaning. So, depending on the type of floor you have in your warehouse, you might need to use different equipment, different cleaning products, and different cleaning techniques.

This is where professional cleaning companies can help. They have the best tools and trained staff for all types of cleaning needs.

3. Spot Cleaning

Dirt or spill spots are common in warehouses, and leaving them as they are is not a good look for your warehouse floor. Removing these stubborn stains requires more than just a simple sweep and scrub. So, before you scrub the entire warehouse floor, it’s best to point out the spots and clean them one at a time.

Purpose-made cleaners and degreasers are available in the market that can be used for effective spot cleaning.

4. Scrubbing The Floor

With the dirt and spills cleaned, it’s time to thoroughly clean the warehouse floor. You must choose the best cleaning product that suits your warehouse floor type and scrub every inch of the floor. Spreading the cleaning products and scrubbing the floor equally is essential for an effective warehouse floor cleaning.

For small warehouses, mops or small scrubbing machines can do a decent job. If you have a big warehouse, get a ride-on scrubber.

5. Rinse & Dry The Floor

The last step is to fully rinse the warehouse floor with water. This is to get rid of any cleaning solution still left on the floor. If you don’t rinse a warehouse floor with water after thorough scrubbing, the floor will get slippery and dust will build up quicker than ever.

After a complete rinsing, let the floor dry before you open the warehouse for use. If you’re in a hurry, use dry mops or industrial fans to quickly dry the excess water.

Conclusion

And that’s how to clean a warehouse floor effectively!

Instead of getting a deep clean once or twice a month, it’s best to regularly maintain a clean warehouse floor. Doing so ensures a safe and efficient workspace for your employees. Just remember to follow the steps mentioned above to clean your warehouse floor.

The most important thing is to “sweep before you scrub.”
