When you learn a new language, you should focus on all of the aspects of it, including listening skills. It can be challenging, especially if you have just started learning. Read this short article to discover some tips which can help you to master your listening skills.

Prepare an Immersive Experience

Try to surround yourself with the language as much as possible. While living in a country where the language is in use would be ideal, that’s rarely a common situation. Instead, try to bring the language into your everyday life: listen to music, find your favorite podcast, or even start following native-speaking creators on social media. This way, you can get used to the sound of the language and various accents, learn how to pronounce words, and even learn some catchy phrases.

Binge-Watch Your Favorite Series

If you want to improve your language skills and like to binge-watch programs, you can connect both things in one. While watching TV in another language can improve your listening skills, it might not be as effective as you would like. This is why apps such as Lingopie adjusted their interactive programs of learning from TV to your native language, goals, fluency levels, and even time you want to dedicate to learning.

Read this Lingopie review to learn what are the advantages and disadvantages of the app.

Use Interactive Learning Resources

The more interactive your learning resources, the better. If you are taking a course, you can listen to the recorded voice of native speakers. Find websites where you can listen to the recording of sentences you are trying to memorize. A great idea is also to use a language-learning app. With a game-like interface and many interactive resources, you can practice various language aspects, including listening.

Use Varied Audio Pacing

Sometimes we have problems understanding other people in other languages, because they speak too fast. A good way to improve your skills is to start listening to audio at a slower pace and then increase it gradually.

Repeat What You Hear

To reinforce your memory and practice pronunciation, repeat words and phrases you hear. This will not only help you verify if you understand what you hear but can improve your speaking skills and make you more open about speaking in a foreign language.

Try Active Listening

When you listen to music while cleaning your room, you practice passive listening. However, studies show that to make better progress with language learning, it’s better to listen actively. You should give your full attention to the audio material you are studying. You can, for example, listen to something and then write a few questions which can help you clarify things you didn’t understand. Then you should listen again and try to respond to those questions. A good idea is also to write a short summary of what you heard. These types of exercises train your brain to focus on everything that is said and can help you to understand a language in real life situations.
