Common Problems People Have When Buying SSL Certificates

Making your website safe starts with getting an SSL certificate. It hides your visitor’s details to keep them safe. They allow you to show a padlock on your website, create trust among your users and give your pages a higher spot in search engine listings. Choosing an SSL certificate can sometimes be confusing for people. Many individuals run into certain issues while trying to buy anything. In this post, we’ll explain the common issues that occur with simple solutions on how to avoid or fix them.

  • Confusion about the type of security certificate you should get

It’s often difficult for website owners to decide which SSL certificate they require. Certificates can be split into two groups: Single Domain, Wildcard and Multi-Domain (SAN) certificates. A regular SSL protects just a single website, for example www.example.com. A wildcard SSL covers a single site and all its subdomains such as blog.example.com and shop.example.com. One multi-domain SSL can cover several websites with a single certificate. Wrong type means your website or subdomains aren’t secure and you might have to pay an extra cost unnecessarily.

  • Buying from  a Company Without a Reputation

A few people cut cost by obtaining SSL certificates from unfamiliar or budget-priced companies. As a result, users could suffer from slow support, invalid certificates or certificates that browsers won’t recognize. Guests visiting your site may see a notification and leave if Chrome or Firefox do not trust your SSL certificate. GoDaddy, DigiCert and Let’s Encrypt (for the simple SSL package) are safe and trusted companies to get SSL certificates.

  • Difficulties in the process of Domain Validation

You have to show ownership of the domain before you can get an SSL certificate. It is known as domain validation. Some individuals struggle because they haven’t read or used the instructions correctly. Sometimes, they will not verify their account by email or fail to share the necessary file on the Internet. An SSL certificate won’t be issued unless the domain has been validated. Be sure to complete all requirements and remember to use the correct details when you purchase the certificate.

  • Delays

It’s also common for shipments to take longer than they should. Those certificates with higher security levels such as Extended Validation (EV), often take more time to organize. Being in a rush can make this process a little frustrating. There can be delays when a site’s payment fails or when validating the domain is not approved. Make sure all your details are correct before placing the order and try to reply quickly to all verification messages.

  • Installation challenge

With a new SSL certificate, installation should be done on your website’s hosting server. Many people find this step challenging, mainly if they aren’t familiar with technology. Errors or complete loss of the certificate’s effect may occur if the installation is done incorrectly. Detailed steps for setting up the software are available from many providers or you can get help from them at no cost. Sometimes, your web hosting service will help you install the SSL certificate.

Final Thoughts

An SSL certificate should be obtained for website safety, but doing so is not always easy. One of the usual problems is to select the incorrect type, trust unreliable companies or miss the domain validation. It’s possible that you’ll run into issues with the installation of the certificate. The nice thing is that you can prevent these problems if you are aware of them. Whenever you use purchase certificates, make sure to get it from a proven supplier, proceed through each stage correctly and contact support if you encounter difficulties. You can make your website safe and trustworthy if you choose wisely and keep it managed.
