Keep Your Smile Strong and Healthy by Avoiding These 4 Oral Care Mistakes

Most people dream of having strong teeth, healthy gums, and a bright, beautiful smile. However, not everyone takes the right steps to achieve these goals and maintain good dental health. In fact, plenty of people make mistakes that can damage their teeth and gums and increase their risk for dental diseases. Here are some of the oral health blunders you should avoid:

Not brushing your teeth properly

Experts advise that you should brush your teeth twice a day using fluoride toothpaste for at least two minutes per session. However, don’t brush your teeth right after a meal, particularly when you consume sodas, citrus fruits, citrus juices, and other high-acid foods or drinks. This is because acid can soften the enamel on your teeth, making it easier to wash away when you brush immediately after.

Brushing your teeth too aggressively

Yes, it IS possible to brush your teeth too hard, and it’s definitely not recommended by dental health experts. Overbrushing is dangerous since it can cause your gums to recede and make your teeth more sensitive, which can pave the way to a myriad of oral health problems. To prevent overbrushing, replace your old toothbrush with a soft-bristled one. Instead of sawing the toothbrush across your teeth, use a scrubbing motion with short strokes and apply enough pressure to feel the bristles but without bending them.

Believing that dentures are for aesthetics only

For many people, having missing teeth is unsightly—something that can negatively affect their overall look. Because of this, they often consider dentures to be an important tool in keeping themselves looking young and beautiful. But, while wearing dentures does improve your appearance, remember that it’s not just about aesthetics. For one thing, it prevents jaw bone resorption or bone loss, which can happen when your jaw doesn’t receive enough stimulation due to the missing teeth. It also boosts your mouth’s overall functionality, allowing you to enjoy a wide range of foods and ensuring that you can chew each bite thoroughly. As an added bonus, it improves your oral health since it closes the gaps where food particles can accumulate and create a breeding ground for bacteria.

Don’t worry since getting dentures isn’t difficult! If you have a missing tooth or more, visit a trusted denture clinic in Sydney that can provide you with partial, full, or implant-supported dentures. Through their solutions, you can get dentures that will restore your smile and give your oral health a huge boost.

Going too long without getting a dental checkup

When was the last time you had an appointment with your dentist? If it was many years ago, or if you can’t even remember your last dental appointment, it’s time to schedule one ASAP. Remember: regular dental checkups are important since they allow your dentist to catch oral health issues in the early stages and treat them accordingly before they worsen. Generally, most adults should see their dentist once every two years. However, if you have gum and/or tooth problems, you’ll probably have to schedule your checkups every three to six months.

Maintaining good oral health is often a huge challenge. Fortunately, by avoiding these mistakes, you’ll lower the risk of developing cavities and gum diseases and keep your smile bright and whole.
