What’s the weather in Cancun? Plan the right time to go

When planning a trip to the Mexican Caribbean, one of the first things to consider is what’s the weather in Cancun. This coastal destination has a tropical climate that shapes the experience in many ways—sun exposure, humidity, and rainfall all influence how each day plays out.

Cancun has two main seasons: a dry season from late November through April, and a rainy season that runs from May to October. Rainy days aren’t always gloomy, though—many start off bright and warm before a quick shower rolls in later. If you’re already looking into flights to Cancun, checking the seasonal weather patterns can help you time your arrival for the kind of trip you have in mind.

The dry season: lower humidity, clearer skies

Between December and April, the city sees some of its most pleasant weather. Temperatures typically stay between 27°C and 29°C (80°F to 84°F), and humidity is more manageable. Evening breezes can cool things down slightly, especially in January and February.

This period sees very little rainfall and is favored by travelers for that reason. Expect higher hotel rates and busier beaches, particularly around holidays and spring break.

This weather is great for exploring ruins, walking tours, and time in the water. For those wondering what’s the weather like in Cancun in March or April, you’ll likely find sunny mornings and comfortable evenings throughout your stay.

The wet season: short rains and warmer days

From May through October, things get hotter and more humid. Showers usually come in the afternoon or evening, and while they can be intense, they rarely last long.

This season includes the city’s hurricane window, particularly between August and October, though most systems pass without major impact. Cloud cover builds fast some days, so it’s helpful to plan outdoor activities for the morning.

During this time, travelers might adjust plans based on the forecast—visiting indoor attractions or reserving spa time during rainy hours, for example. Mosquito repellent is essential, especially after sunset.

Cancun’s weather by month: a quick breakdown

Here’s a general month-by-month overview of Cancun’s weather by month to guide your planning:

Month Avg High Temp (°C/°F) Rainfall & Conditions
January 27°C / 81°F Dry, cooler evenings, peak tourism season
February 28°C / 82°F Sunny, low humidity, popular travel month
March 29°C / 84°F Warm and breezy, very little rain
April 30°C / 86°F Start of warmer days, humidity increases
May 32°C / 90°F Start of rainy season, short showers common
June 32°C / 90°F Humid, afternoon rains, ocean still clear
July 33°C / 91°F Hot and muggy, some cloud buildup
August 33°C / 91°F High chance of rain, peak hurricane risk
September 32°C / 90°F Storm season continues, fewer crowds
October 31°C / 88°F Rain begins to fade, humidity remains high
November 29°C / 84°F Rain decreases, cooler breezes return
December 28°C / 82°F Comfortable temps, popular holiday travel

This seasonal cycle influences everything from sea conditions to availability for certain tours and excursions. Understanding how the weather shifts throughout the year can help you choose the best time for your visit.

What the forecast doesn’t tell you

Forecasts in Cancun can be misleading if you’re unfamiliar with the region. A high chance of rain doesn’t always mean a rainy day; more often, it suggests brief showers at a specific time—commonly late afternoon. The rest of the day can be clear and sunny.

Conditions tend to be warm year-round, but factors like wind, UV index, and sudden cloud cover can impact how the days feel. Cloud cover can shift within minutes, and high UV levels are common even when it’s overcast. Packing sunscreen, a hat, and light clothing with coverage is smart regardless of the month.

Timing makes the trip

Traveling with realistic expectations about local weather makes the experience smoother and more enjoyable. Some travelers prefer the dry season for its predictability, while others take advantage of the lower prices during summer, accepting occasional rain as part of the tradeoff.

Keeping an eye on what’s the weather in Cancun before your trip lets you plan with more confidence. Whether for a quiet beach escape or a busy schedule of day trips, in a destination that runs on sun and sea, timing is everything.
