Packing Tips from the Pros: How to Prepare for a Stress-Free Moving Day

A successful move doesn’t begin on moving day; it begins when you start packing. Whether you’re moving across the street or to another state, how well you prepare for your move will directly affect your stress levels, the safety of your things, and the overall efficiency of your moving experience. Packing tends to be undervalued, and it can either make or break your relocation. Luckily, with a few tips from the experts and a little planning, what seems like a daunting task can be a manageable experience.

Packing Tips From Professional Movers:

1. Start Early and Declutter First

Don’t wait until the last week to pack, because it almost always takes longer than you think. You should begin packing at least 3–4 weeks before moving, so you will want to start filling in rooms with items you don’t use regularly. Focus on closets, cabinets, and storage areas first.

  • Make, sell, or throw out anything you’re not taking.
  • Write “keep,” “donate,” and “toss” on sticky notes or pieces of tape and label everything in those categories.

Why is decluttering important? Decluttering will reduce the volume of items to pack, save you time and money in moving costs, and give you a better starting point in your new space.

2. Pack Room by Room—and Label Everything Clearly

Unpacking and organizing one room at a time to minimize confusion will be less overwhelming. This approach and organizing similar items into one box will reduce the clutter.

  • Use quality boxes and fill them with items specific to the room you are working on.
  • Label each box with its contents and the room it belongs to (e.g., “Kitchen—Dishes”).
  • To make it even easier for the movers to identify the box, use tape in a color specific to each room.

Bonus tip: Label at least two sides of each box so that you can identify the contents no matter how they are stacked.

3. Protect Fragile and High-Value Items

When moving fragile items, take your time and don’t cut corners; you could pay for it later. Things can get damaged and broken if you don’t have the right packing materials.

  • Pack dishes, glassware, and decor in bubble wrap or packing paper.
  • Place dish pack boxes containing dividers inside to hold the items steady.
  • Fill any voids with crumbled paper or soft goods like towels to ensure the packing material doesn’t shift.

If electronics are still in their original boxes, pack them in the original box if you have it. If not the original box, use heavy-duty moving boxes with some packing material added; if this is done, mark the box as “Fragile – Electronics” so movers will take extra care.

4. Pack an Essentials Box (Or Two)

The first 24 to 48 hours in your new home will likely feel frantic. To avoid frantic rummaging around for a toothbrush or your phone charger, set aside a couple of “essentials” boxes.

Packing essentials boxes can consist of the following:

  • Toiletries and hygiene products
  • Phone charger, laptop, power cords
  • A change of clothes
  • Basic kitchen items (Plate, Mug, Snacks, Kettle)
  • Medications and important documents
  • Sheets, pillows, and a towel for everyone
  • Label and load these well; they are the first boxes you unload.

5. Don’t Overpack Boxes—and Keep Weight Balanced

You may want to fill every box, but be careful. Heavy boxes are prone to breakage and do not transport as easily.

  • Try to keep individual boxes under 50 lbs whenever possible.
  • Ensure weight distribution by placing heavier items at the bottom and lighter items on top.
  • Remember to use small boxes for books and other heavy items, and larger boxes for light, bulky items such as bedding and pillows.

Following these guidelines will protect your things and allow movers to do the work quickly and safely.

6. Coordinate with Your Moving Company Early

Professional movers can be extremely valuable, but if they are not informed, they will not be. Tell them:

  • How many boxes will you have
  • What items require special handling
  • Parking access and building access at both buildings
  • Dates and times you would like to move

Proactive booking with your movers and having expectations will avoid confusion and delays on the moving day.
