It makes ring shopping a lot easier particularly when shopping online  if you know the size of your ring.

To measure ring size at home you can use string, paper, a ruler or a ring that fits properly.

How to measure the ring size?

To measure size of rings, you can use:

  • String
  • A strip of paper
  • An existing ring
  • A printable ring size chart.
  • Ring sizer

To achieve a better outcome, repeat the measurement more than once.

To measure ring sizes using strings, follow the steps below:

You will need:

  • Thin string
  • A pen
  • A ruler

Loop the string around your finger’s base.

Keep it snug, but not too tight.

Indicate the point of overlap.

Then pull the string tight and measure the length of the mark in mm.

This will give you an idea of the circumference of your finger.

Use a ring size chart to compare the measurement.

Use this second method to find your ring size

A piece of paper will serve almost as well.

  1. Cut off a long thin piece of paper.
  2. Make a roll around the finger.
  3. Draw the line that represents the point of overlap of the paper.
  4. Remove it.
  5. Measure length in millimeters.
  6. Compare it with a ring size chart.

Pull the paper not too much.

Method 3: Measure an existing ring

If one has a ring sizing system that is known to be comfortable, one may use it to determine their size.

Set the ring down on a flat surface.

Take the diameter of the inner diameter from one inner edge to the other.

Use millimeters.

Next, use a ring size chart to compare the measurement.

A US ring size 7 is about the size of an inside diameter of 17.3 mm.

The most common ring size chart

US Ring Size Inside Diameter in mm Circumference in mm
5 15.7 mm 49.3 mm
6 16.5 mm 51.9 mm
7 17.3 mm 54.4 mm
8 18.1 mm 57.0 mm
9 18.9 mm 59.5 mm
10 19.8 mm 62.1 mm
11 20.6 mm 64.6 mm
12 21.4 mm 67.2 mm

Some jewelers may size a necklace slightly differently, make sure to view the jeweler’s size chart.

At what age should you measure a ring size?

The size of fingers may vary during the day.

It is possible that your fingers are smaller in cold weather and larger in warm weather.

Thus, it is better to measure later in the day.

Avoid measuring:

  • If they are extremely cold.
  • Right after exercise
  • Make sure to properly clean and dry your hands when they are swollen.
  • During extreme heat

What should be done if a ring should be fitted?

The ring should fit snugly and comfortably.

It should:

  • Slide over your knuckle with slight resistance
  • Stay in place
  • Not feel painful
  • Avoid leaving a long lasting impression
  • Be easily removable

If it’s easy to slide off, it’s too loose. If it is hard to take off it might be too tight.

What If Your Knuckle Is Bigger?

If the knuckle is considerably bigger than the base of the finger, measure both the knuckle and the base of the finger.

The ring should be placed over the knuckle and comfortable at the base of the finger.

When the difference is significant, professional sizing might be helpful.

If You are “Between Sizes,” What If?

If the measurement is in between two sizes, then it is best to go with the larger one often.

For wide bands, this is particularly true; they may feel tighter than thin rings.

How to measure another ring size

For the ring that you want to purchase on the spur of the moment, borrow a ring from someone else that already has a ring on the same finger.

Use a tape measure to determine the inside diameter and compare it to a size chart.

If you have no idea of the person’s size, you may inquire of a friend or family member if they have any information on this.

Keep in mind that one finger of each hand may not be the same length.

Do rings fit into the same size?

No.

There are different ring-sizing systems in different countries.

For example:

  • The numbers are used in both the U.S. and Canada.
  • The UK has a standard of using letters.
  • The circumference is frequently employed in European sizes.

When purchasing from an international seller, refer to a conversion chart.

Here are a few tips

For better accuracy:

  • Take 2 or 3 measurements
  • Use millimeters
  • Use the correct sized finger.
  • Avoid stressing string/paper too much
  • Take into account the size of your knuckles.
  • Measure the diameter of the ring
  • Use the seller’s size chart:

If the ring is a special or auctions, the professional sizing is generally the best choice.
